Packing Information
  • Lightweight layer-able clothing is best. In the mountains it can get very cool at night (and during the day at high altitudes), but in the jungle it is very hot. Be prepared for the full range of temperatures and conditions. Zip-off fast drying pants (that turn into shorts) and fast drying shirts/t-shirts are much more comfortable in the case of rain and/or for the hot, sweaty  jungle walks.
  • A waterproof jacket or poncho is a must (especially on the January trip)! Cheap plastic ponchos are readily available in the mountain towns, but once we get to the jungle you will need to be ready for rain. Waterproof bags and/or ziplocks come in handy too.
  • A hat and good sunscreen - 35-40 spf is recommended
  • Toilet paper! Toilet paper is available in all the Hotels and at Wakani Lodge, but not very many public places will have toilet paper. Note: Almost without exception there will be a small garbage can next to the toilets for toilet paper. It is hard on the plumbing and septic systems to flush toilet paper, so please use the cans.
  • Tampons/Feminine products - they are available in Iquitos and other mountain towns, but very expensive.
  • Mosquito repellent(with DEET)! Once in the jungle, it is an absolute necessity!
  • A Flashlight - Headlamps are handy and very useful, but a hand-held flashlight is preferable in the jungle. Having a swarm of mosquitoes and other flying bugs around your face is no fun!
  • Moist Towelettes
  • Snacks
  • Camera and lots of film/digital cards! There is an unbelievable number of things worthy of pictures, so bring a lot of media.
  • Medicines (See Medical Information and Cautions)
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Most people that have gone to Peru more than once will bring a bag full of clothes and gifts to leave there (then fill up with textiles and gifts to bring back). The need for children's clothing is omnipresent in all the small villages both in the mountains and the jungle.
  • Very clean, unwrinkled currency and a money belt - Even in Cusco or Lima, torn or worn bills will not be accepted. While we've never had anything stolen from any of our passengers, it is a good idea to take reasonable precautions with your money by splitting it up and keeping some in a money belt.
